YOU CAN HELP…
Wisconsin wetlands are under attack!
Update: AB 547 passed in the Assembly 58-39 on a mostly party line vote with only four Republicans voting against it. Its companion bill in the Senate (SB 600 as amended) is scheduled for a floor vote Tuesday, Feb. 27. Contact your senator now! This bill will harm wetland resources and undermines community-based efforts to preserve habitat, reduce flooding, and maintain clean water.
Update: AB 547 is expected to be voted on in the Assembly on Thursday, February 15th, with a Senate vote soon thereafter.
AB 547/SB 600 proposed to eliminate state permit protections for more than one million acres of “isolated,” non-federal wetlands. The measure took away DNR authority to assess the ecological impact of isolated wetlands before they could be filled and land developed. Since last fall a large coalition of conservation partners and sporting groups have been attempting to offer the bill’s authors alternatives to address permitting difficulties and delays.
Despite these efforts, recently an amended version of AB 547 passed through the Assembly Committee on Regulatory Licensing Reform clearing the way for the destruction of hundreds of thousands of acres of wetlands important for providing fish and wildlife habitat, reducing floods, recharging groundwater, and protecting water quality.
We urge you to contact your legislator and do the following:
Call or email them and ask them to vote no on the amended version of AB 547 in the Assembly.
The bill will likely be considered soon by the Senate Committee on Natural Resources and Energy. Check to see if your Senator sits on the committee.
