A Report on Statewide Compliance with the Traditional
Neighborhood Development Ordinance Requirement in the Wisconsin
Comprehensive Planning Law

Summary
- 57 communities in Wisconsin were required, as part of the Smart
Growth law (Wisconsin Act 9, Wisconsin Statute § 66.1027),
to have a Traditional Neighborhood Development ordinance adopted
by January 1, 2002
- 25 of 57 communities (43%) have adopted an ordinance or made
changes to existing codes.
- At least 16 more communities (28%) are in progress.
- 9 communities (15%) are not in compliance with the law.
- The actions of 7 communities (12%) are unclear.
- As many as 32 communities (57%) may not be in compliance with
the law.
