In the last state budget, the Legislature cut the Knowles-Nelson Stewardship Program by 30%, from $86 million a year down to $60 million a year. The program is authorized through 2020, so this represents a total reduction of $234 million. Unfortunately, as the current state budget process reaches a crucial phase in the coming weeks, some members of the Legislature want to cut even further. The Stewardship Program, with its long history of bipartisan support, would be severely compromised by additional cuts.
